Herbs & Botanicals Moringa
Leaf — Moringa oleifera

Moringa Leaf

Shade-dried Indian moringa leaf as powder, tea-bag cut and whole leaf, from the Dindigul–Theni–Tuticorin growing districts of Tamil Nadu. Leaf-only material, declared as such. Quoted in two clearly separated microbial tiers, because on this botanical the microbial count — not the price — is what usually fails a lot.

The one decision that sets the price

You can have bright green, or you can have a low microbial count. Honestly quoted, not both.

Moringa leaf is a low-moisture, high-surface-area, field-harvested product, and it arrives at the mill with a naturally high plate count. Bringing that count down means applying heat, and heat costs the vivid green that buyers judge the powder by. Anyone offering you a bright-green powder and a 104 plate count at a commodity price is doing one of three things below. Two of them will hurt you.

Route to a low count What it does to the leaf Colour Do we offer it?
Careful shade-drying & clean handling Reduces the starting count as far as good practice can, without heat. Gets you to roughly 10⁵, rarely below. Bright green — retained Yes — our standard leaf line
Steam sterilisation Saturated steam applied to the leaf or powder. Reliably reaches 10⁴ and can go lower. Costs some chlorophyll and a little of the water-soluble fraction. Duller olive-green Yes — quoted as a separate SKU
Ethylene oxide fumigation Cheap, fast, effective on count — and a banned residue in the EU, UK and a growing list of other markets. The 2020–24 EtO recalls started here. Green retained No. Not at any price.
Irradiation Effective, and lawful in some markets under declaration. Unacceptable to most organic and clean-label programmes, and must be declared to the importer. Green mostly retained No — we ship non-irradiated
How to buy this correctly: tell us the plate-count limit in your own incoming-goods specification before you ask for a price. If your limit is 105 and you blend into a product that gets a downstream kill step, buy the unsterilised bright-green lot and keep the colour. If your limit is 104 because you are filling capsules that ship as-is, buy the steam-sterilised lot and accept a duller olive tone. Quoting those two as one product is how moringa consignments end up rejected on arrival.

Powder, tea-cut, whole leaf and seed

Every leaf line below is leaf-only. Stalk and stem content is the cheapest way to add weight to moringa powder, and it shows up as elevated crude fibre and a dull grey-green cast — so we sieve for it and report the fibre figure rather than leaving you to find it.

Product / SKU Drying & treatment Typical TPC Best use / buyer

Certificate of Analysis

The panel we run on every leaf lot

Moringa leaf ash runs naturally high because the leaf is mineral-dense — a total-ash figure around 10% is normal material, not adulteration. The number that separates clean leaf from field trash is the acid-insoluble ash, which is soil and grit, and we report both so the distinction is visible.

On composition figures: we report protein, fibre, ash and moisture per lot as an analytical result, and we will report a vitamin or mineral panel if your specification calls for one. What we will not do is turn those numbers into a nutrition or health statement in our documentation. Moringa is one of the most over-claimed botanicals in the trade, and a raw-material supplier repeating those claims on an invoice creates a compliance problem for the buyer who has to defend the label.
Which part of the tree

Leaf and seed, yes. Root, no.

We supply leaf in powder, tea-cut and whole forms, and seed (PKM-1 and local varieties) for oil extraction and for planting stock. Pods and drumstick material we can source on enquiry as a dried vegetable line.

We do not supply moringa root or root bark for food or supplement use. Root material carries alkaloids not present in leaf at meaningful levels, and it is not a food-use part in the markets we ship to. If a supplier is offering you cheap “moringa powder” without naming the plant part, that is the question to ask.

Packaging & loadability

Bulk export formats

FormatNet weightTypical use
Multi-layer paper bag, PE-lined 20–25 kg Leaf powder, standard export
Aluminium-lined bag in carton 10–20 kg Organic and colour-sensitive lots
Carton with PE liner 10–15 kg Tea-cut and whole leaf (protects the cut)
BOPP laminated bag 1–25 kg Private label / own brand, retail-ready
Plan this by volume, not tonnage. Moringa leaf powder has a bulk density around 0.3–0.4 g/cc. A 20-ft container holds roughly 6–9 MT of powder and only 4–6 MT of whole dried leaf — against about 18 MT of a spice powder. Buyers who budget freight per tonne on a spice benchmark get an unpleasant surprise on their first moringa shipment; we will give you the cube with the quotation so you do not.
Buyer FAQ
Why is the moringa powder I bought previously olive-brown instead of bright green?

Almost always heat. Either the leaf was sun-dried or hot-air dried instead of shade-dried, or the lot was steam-sterilised to bring the microbial count down, or the powder is old and has oxidised in a bag with a poor moisture barrier. Stalk and stem content also dulls the colour towards grey-green. Colour is a reasonable first-pass quality proxy on moringa, which is exactly why we hold a retained visual standard per lot and will report CIE L*a*b* if your specification uses it.

What plate count can you actually achieve without EtO or irradiation?

Around 10⁵ cfu/g on carefully shade-dried, cleanly handled leaf, and reliably 10⁴ or below with steam sterilisation. If your specification demands 10⁴ on a bright-green unsterilised powder at a commodity price, no honest Indian supplier can meet it, and an offer that says otherwise is worth testing on arrival before you pay.

Do you supply certified organic moringa?

Yes, under NPOP with NOP and EU equivalence, with the transaction certificate travelling with the lot. Raise it at enquiry stage rather than after pricing: organic lots come from a separate supply pool, so it moves the lead time out to roughly four to six weeks as well as the price.

How much moringa fits in a 20-ft container?

Roughly 6 to 9 MT of leaf powder, and only 4 to 6 MT of whole dried leaf — against about 18 MT for a spice powder. Bulk density is around 0.3 to 0.4 g/cc, so the container fills by volume long before it fills by weight. We quote the cube alongside the tonnage so your freight budget is built on the right number.

Can you put the vitamin and mineral content on the COA?

We can report a compositional or micronutrient panel per lot if your specification calls for one, as an analytical result from an accredited laboratory. What we will not do is convert those figures into nutritional or health statements in our paperwork. That is a claim, it belongs on your finished label under your own regulator, and a raw-material supplier making it for you is a liability rather than a service.

Do you supply moringa root or root bark?

Not for food or supplement use. The root carries alkaloids that leaf material does not contain at meaningful levels and it is not an accepted food-use part in the markets we ship into. We supply leaf, seed, and dried pod. If an offer you are comparing says only "moringa powder" without naming the plant part, ask which part before you buy.

Sample both tiers, side by side

We send 250 g of the unsterilised and 250 g of the steam-sterilised lot together, each with its own micro COA. Put them next to each other and the colour decision makes itself. Free — you cover courier.

Organic is the norm here

More moringa buyers specify certified organic than not. It is available under NPOP with NOP and EU equivalence, with the transaction certificate travelling with the lot. Ask for it at enquiry stage — it changes lead time, not just price.
